Antoon Postma Lecture

Bapa Antoon Postma (1929-2016)

Father of Mangyanology and Culture Advocacy
The man who dedicated his entire life to the Mangyans
and whose works and dream continue to inspire us.

Culture is a dynamic and evolving entity, intricately shaped by daily interactions and interplay of a people and their environment. The meeting of two cultures should embody a profound recognition, respect, and celebration of each other's cultural treasures and identities.

The Mangyans of Mindoro serve as the custodians of their own ethnic histories and traditions, preserving a diverse array of communal customs, languages, norms, rituals, and beliefs that have been passed down through generations. Through their deliberate choice of isolation to insulate themselves from external influences, they have not only safeguarded their cultural heritage but also provided invaluable insights into the pre-Hispanic Filipino identity.

Credit is rightfully attributed to esteemed researchers such as Conklin, Postma, Miyamoto, Kikuchi, and other dedicated anthropologists who have diligently worked to uncover the hidden cultural truths and realities of the Mangyan people. Their ethnographic studies have played a crucial role in dispelling societal biases against this indigenous group.

Our mainstream society has developed a profound appreciation for the enriching contributions of Indigenous Peoples to Filipino heritage. Today, we commemorate their unique cultural legacy with a sense of pride and admiration.

The traditional teachings and enduring values encapsulated in Mangyan culture and traditions offer a compelling narrative of reverence for nature, harmonious communal living, and resilient family bonds that serve as a source of inspiration for all.

Seek Mangyan Community Approval

Mangyan Culture Research, Exposure, and Field Work Policy

Before initiating any research or project involving the Mangyan community, it is crucial to obtain their approval. We recommend that representatives of your organization contact us for proper coordination and community consent.

Please get in touch with us to discuss your intentions and plans for your proposed activities. Each Mangyan group is represented by a People Organization (PO) with elected leaders, and it is vital to respect their rights. We shall refer your request to the PO leader concerned.

In the past, the Mangyan people have felt disrespected by individuals who entered their community to study their culture, taking photographs of their surroundings, homes, children, and elders without permission or recognition of their ownership rights.

To prevent any disrespect or misuse of cultural materials, outsiders must consult with Mangyan leaders and elders, explain their purpose and project, and obtain permission.

When granted access to their communities, it is important to follow proper protocols and Mangyan customs. Receive orientation from their designated representatives before visiting their areas.
