Two of the Only Four Living Philippine Indigenous Syllabic Scripts
The Buhid-Mangyans and the Hanunuo-Mangyans, together with the Tagbanua and Palaw'an of Palawan Island have preserved their unique syllabic scripts for generations.
Collaborating with the Hanunuo and Buhid communities, alongside our partners, we strive to support and empower their cultural leaders in passing down script literacy and writing traditions to the younger generation.

Mangyan Scripts, Literary Heritage, and Collections
This virtual panel event focuses on Mangyan scripts and literary heritage, which have persisted through the centuries despite the experiences of Spanish, and then American rule. It also highlights Mangyan collections at the Library of Congress, the Mangyan Heritage Center, Newberry Library, and Yale Peabody Museum. Panelists will discuss Mangyan holdings at these institutions, as well as Mangyan writing - thought to be Indic-derived - and literary forms such as the ambahan, a song poem of seven syllables per line.
